“Reading is fundamental to education. Proficiency in reading, writing, and spoken language is vital for pupils’ success.” Department for Education, The Reading Framework: Teaching the foundations of literacy (January 2022)

The ability to read is fundamental to pupils’ development as independent learners and to their ability to succeed in later life. St Mary’s prioritises reading and makes it their mission to enable every child in their school to become a fluent reader. We take a holistic approach to reading: beginning with the fundamentals of the discreet teaching of phonics and comprehension skills in reading lessons; the repetition and application of skills within writing; developing a genuine pleasure for reading through class novels and independent choices in libraries; to reading being at the heart of all lessons across our curriculum as we read to gain knowledge and understanding.

Intent:

General

  • For all pupils to become confident, fluent readers;
  • For all pupils to experience a wide range of reading material, including a range of fiction and non-fiction, varied genres, books that reflect our multicultural community, and books that go beyond their immediate experiences and knowledge;
  • Develop a culture of reading within the school to encourage a ‘love for reading’;
  • Have a consistent approach to the teaching of reading throughout the school.

Writing

“Learning to write well allows pupils to share their ideas, communicate with others and learn from the wider curriculum.” (OFSTED Research and Analysis: English 2022)

At St Mary’s we aim to develop pupils’ abilities within and integrated Framework of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. We understand that children who read well are more likely to be successful writers and therefore, we use a reading route to writing, with high quality texts at the heart of our curriculum. Our ‘Talk 4 Writing’ approach allows our children to flourish in all areas of the English curriculum. In addition to this, Pupils will be given opportunities to interrelate the requirements of English within a broad and balanced approach to the teaching of English across the curriculum, with opportunities to consolidate and reinforce taught literacy skills. At St Mary’s School we strive for children to be a ‘Primary Literate Pupil’.
