Early Years Foundation Stage

Welcome to St Mary’s Early Years Foundation Stage. We have three classes within our EYFS. The Preschool is for children aged two. The Nursery is where our three and four year olds spend their time. The two Reception classes are for children due to turn five years old. Our Preschool has its own room and beautiful outdoor area. Nursery and the Reception classes each have their own rooms and share a large internal space and enclosed outdoor area. They also have access to the larger playgrounds for climbing, cycling, scootering, and exploring.
Our aims are to ensure that:
- All children access a broad and balanced curriculum that gives them the range of knowledge and skills needed for good progress through school and life
- There is quality and consistency in teaching and learning so that every child makes good progress and no child gets left behind
- A close working partnership between staff and parents and/or carers is established quickly
- Every child is included and supported through equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice
Our Early Years Curriculum
At St Mary’s we give our children every opportunity to achieve their best. We do this by taking account of our children’s range of life experiences when planning for their learning. In the Early Years we set realistic and challenging expectations that meet the needs of our children. We achieve this by planning to meet the needs of boys and girls, children with special educational needs and disabilities, children who are more able, children from all social and cultural backgrounds, children of different ethnic groups and those from diverse linguistic backgrounds. The statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage sets out the requirements of educational programmes for early learning and care. It gives all professionals a set of common principles and commitments to deliver quality early education and childcare experiences to all children from birth to five years. At St Mary’s, we have used the ‘Development Matters’ documents to help us to design an effective early years curriculum, whilst meeting the requirements of the statutory framework.

Parents as Partners
We recognise that children learn and develop well when there is a strong partnership between staff and parents and/or carers. Parents and/or carers are kept up to date with their child’s progress and development. The progress check and EYFS profile helps to provide parents and/or carers with a well-rounded picture of their child’s knowledge, understanding and abilities. In addition, parents and/or carers will have daily access to their child’s online Learning Journey and will receive a termly written report from the class teacher. Parent’s Evenings are held once a term. Each child is assigned a key person who helps to ensure that their learning and care is tailored to meet their needs. The key person supports parents and/or carers in guiding their child’s development at home. Our Early Years SENCo works with staff and parents to identify any concerns and to liaise with additional specialist support if required. We operate a programme of workshops called ‘Stay and Learn’ which encourage parents and/or carers to visit their child’s class and see a learning session in action, followed by an opportunity to talk to staff about supporting their child at home.
